No Strings Attached performed decently at the box office, earning a little over $149 million against its $25 million production budget, but was hardly a romantic comedy mega-hit like My Big Fat Greek Wedding or Crazy Rich Asians. Critics had good things to say about Natalie Portman’s No Strings Attached performance and praised Ivan Reitman’s direction, who has previously dabbled in the romantic comedy genre with movies like Six Days, Seven Nights. Greta Gerwig and Mindy Kaling’s comic performances were praised too, but by and large, No Strings Attached received a pretty lukewarm reception.
Part of the problem was that a movie like No Strings Attached – almost identical in plot, in fact – came out a few months after the movie’s release. Friends With Benefits (which, funnily enough, was the working title of No Strings Attached after the original title was changed) starred Justin Timberlake and Mila Kunis as two young professionals trying to maintain a casual sexual relationship. Although the copycat film fared slightly better with critics and made a little more at the global box office, both No Strings Attached and Friends With Benefits are pretty middling romantic comedy offerings.
Something New

The first look of director Ivan Reitman’s No Strings Attached has been released a few days before its trailer, which is going to premiere this Friday. The film, which stars Natalie Portman and Ashton Kutcher, is about two friends who decide to have a purely physical relationship. Hearts get involved, and you have the perfect romantic comedy. Reitman, of Ghostbusters fame and father of director Jason Reitman (Up in the Air), found his first array into the rated-R comedy hit quite close to home. “I noticed from my own kids that with this generation in particular, young people find it easier to have a sexual relationship than an emotional one. This seems to be a topic that is interesting other film makes, since a similarly named Friends With Benefits is coming out next summer with Justin Timberlake and Mila Kunis. Kutcher has described the film, saying, “I’ve done a lot of these kinds of movies, but this one is a little bit more grown-up. It looks at whether leaving feelings out of it actually works. For a new breed of woman, career comes first, and that has changed the nature of relationships. We should have just called the movie ‘Clooney.’ That’s the kind of relationship George Clooney has had for the past 20 years. He seems happy.” Not only does he enjoy teasing George Clooney, but he has also been excited to work with Reitman. “I was basically raised by Ivan Reitman, me and hundreds of thousands of millions of you and easily influenced young boys. Everything I didn’t learn in school I learned from him.”
